WHAT TO EXPECT

Visiting an osteopath for the first time can be a little intimidating, especially if you are unsure of what to expect. Here’s a guide to help you understand what happens during your first visit to an osteopath:

Health History Assessment:

At the start of your appointment, your osteopath will ask you about your medical history, lifestyle, and any current symptoms or concerns.
This is important as it helps your osteopath to get a complete picture of your overall health and well-being.

Physical Assessment:

Your osteopath will then conduct a thorough physical assessment to identify any areas of tension, pain, or dysfunction.
This may involve gentle palpation, range of motion testing, and other diagnostic tests to help your osteopath to identify the root cause of your symptoms.
It is useful for the osteopath to be able to see the area concerned so they may ask you to remove some of your clothing or underdress to your underwear. Communication is key and if you prefer not to and feel uncomfortable then please say. Practical clothing such as cycle/sports shorts and sports bras are easy for us to work with and do not inhibit our treatment techniques.

Treatment Plan:

Based on the results of your assessment, your osteopath will develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and preferences.
They will explain the treatment plan to you and answer any questions you may have about the treatment process.

Manual Therapy:

The treatment itself may involve a range of manual therapy techniques, such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, and manipulation.
Your osteopath will use their hands to manipulate your muscles, joints, and other soft tissues to relieve pain, improve function, and restore balance to your musculoskeletal system.

Education and Advice:

Your osteopath may provide you with additional advice on exercises, lifestyle modifications, and ergonomic changes to help you maintain optimal health and prevent future injuries.
They may also recommend additional treatment sessions as necessary to help you achieve your health goals.
