Headaches arising from muscular tension in the neck and upper back are common. They are also know as cervicogenic headaches. They are often caused by periods of either short or long term stress or mental tension.
The symptoms of a ‘tension type’ headache are commonly, but not exclusively:
- Pain on both sides of the head rather than just one side.
- Pain on the back part of the head (the occiput) or the forehead region.
- Pain in the neck or upper back
- Can be relatively short term if treated quickly.
Osteopathy can be extremely affective in treating tension type headaches as we have many techniques designed to relax muscles around the neck, back and shoulders. There may include stretching, massage and manipulation.
As with all symptoms, we carry out a full case history on your initial consultation and thoroughly discuss your treatment in advance.
